WARNING: Spoilers for Hawkeye Episode 6 (plus previous episodes)
The MCU's best series yet came to a dramatic end as Clint and Kate faced-down the Kingpin himself.
The Kingpin's presence here wasn't actually that exciting. We knew what he had been up to so there wasn't really any plot to follow up and he isn't really given a lot to do here beyond fight Kate. What a fighter he is though, seemingly uninjured by a range of major attacks. It's great to see Vincent D'Onofrio back in the role but is this the last time we'll see him?
In the episode we saw Maya face-down the Kingpin after discovering he was ultimately responsible for her father's death. She'd already killed her lover Kasi and we see her holding a gun before the camera cuts away and we hear a gunshot. Has she killed Kingpin? At this point we don't know for sure but the fact that we never see his dead body perhaps suggests that he is still lingering on. There is a comic plotline where Maya shoots Kingpin and blinds him which could be the direction they are heading. We can expect some answers and see the next chapter of Maya's story in Echo.
We also saw Clint come face to face with Yelena properly for the first time. Yelena's anger meant she was getting the better of Clint but as we expected he was able to explain to her that he shares her love for Natasha and wishes she was still alive too. It's a really emotional moment for Yelena and it's always heart-breaking seeing this generally hilarious character break down. Though the fight ended with a begrudging respect for Clint, we actually saw that Kate and Yelena get on really well. They are so much fun together and for me the sequence of their reluctant fight was the best of the episode. It's unclear where either character is heading in the future but surely we have to see the two of them working together at some point?
Another talking point is that the owner of the mysterious watch is revealed and it turned out to be Laura Barton. The watch has a SHIELD logo on the back and the number 13, a number synonymous with Mockingbird in Marvel comics, a moniker Laura Barton has held in some universes. Agents of SHIELD though had Adrienne Palecki playing Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird so is the first proper confirmation that AoS is no longer MCU canon. Well, we can't say for sure because it's not even confirmed that Laura was Mockingbird and besides, it is perfectly possible that more than one person could have used the name. This and the fact that WandaVision's darkhold does suggest that AoS happened in an alternate universe but we still don't know for certain.
It would also be an interesting choice to make Laura Barton the MCU's Mockingbird. This could just be a throw away moment which expands the background of Clint and Laura but most teases in the MCU mean something. Maybe Laura Barton is suddenly going to have a bigger role to play in the future, or maybe we'll see her in action in a some sort of flashback. Either way, the prospect of Linda Cardellini playing Mockingbird is a tantalising one.
Hawkeye is Marvel's most consistent, most fun and most watchable series yet. From start to end it's just been innately enjoybale to watch and managed to expertly introduce new characters whilst giving greater depth to established ones too. As the Marvel machine continues to churn out TV shows, Hawkeye should be held up as the gold standard of what they can achieve.
