After a long wait we have finally been gifted with the first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home! In this post I'll go through the trailer, picking out some highlights, work out what was going on and speculate about things that may happen in the film!
MJ reads "some say that Parker's powers include the male spider's powers to hypnotise females" in the paper. This film is set shortly after the end of the Spider-Man: Far From Home where it was revealed to the world by Mysterio that Peter Parker was Spider-Man. It seems that at this point MJ is not too bothered about this news coming out.
This appears to be a continuation of that end scene from Far From Home which perhaps suggests the film will carry on immediately where it left off. In the back you can see JK Simmons as J.Jonah Jameson who I'm sure we'll see some more of in this film.
It looks like after the revelation Peter Parker was arrested and accused of killing Mysterio. There are some brief moments in the trailer which might indicate a trial and it's been rumoured that Charlie Cox will reprise his role as Matt Murdock from Daredevil and be the one defending Peter Parker. We don't see a lawyer in this trailer so there's nothing to say either way on that point.
Peter appears to be back at school here. The timeline is not clear so we don't know whether he's been arrested and released by this point or has yet to be arrested. Either way, it's going to make his everyday life pretty challenging now everyone knows he is Spider-Man.
Peter goes to visit Doctor Strange to seek help in hiding his secret identity from the world once more. The Sanctum appears to be covered in snow when he arrived for reasons that are yet to be revealed. Is this simply a minor magical accident or is something more serious going on?
We get a few quick glances of a new black and gold Spider-Man suit in this trailer. We don't know the purpose of this suit yet. One idea I've had is that the iconic red and blue suit could trigger people's memories so after Strange works his magic Peter is forced to change colour in order to retain the secrecy. However, if that is the case why would he suddenly remove his mask despite being in a very public place?
Wong tells Strange not to cast the spell saying "it's too dangerous" but Strange winks and proceeds anyway. There's been a lot of discussion online about why Strange would do this. One is that this is not really Strange or someone has control of him.
Many have mentioned Mephisto, the Marvel comic book's version of the devil. The character was thought by many to be involved in the events in WandaVision which turned out not to be true but I think there's a little more chance here. Could the frozen Sanctum be a reference to hell freezing over? And besides, this would have a link back to the comic books. After Peter Parker revealed to the world he was Spider-Man in the original Civil War things went pretty badly with him and in the Brand New Day event he literally did a deal with the devil, Mephisto, who changed reality by once again hiding the secret identity and undoing Peter's marriage to MJ in the process.
I think though that a more likely explanation for Strange's behaviour here is an arrogance that's been in the character since his first appearance in the MCU. This is a character who has now defeated Dormammu and Thanos and so it's perhaps inevitable that he feels a hint of invincibility. that he can do whatever he likes and nothing can stop him.
As Strange conducts the spell Peter asks if the people that did know his identity before Mysterio's reveal, Ned, Aunt May and MJ could still remember. Strange tells him to stop tampering with the spell and stop talking and then things appear to go very wrong and some crazy magical stuff happens. At this point it's not entirely clear if this is Peter Parker's fault or whether the events of Loki may play a part too.
The consequences of the spell seem pretty extreme and Strange mentions the multiverse and that we know "frightenly little" about it. At least on that front we know that he is soon going to learn a lot more (in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness).
Happy Hogan makes a brief appearance in this trailer and it's great to see he'll be back here as the uncle relationship he had with Peter in Far From Home worked really well. Given this is the only time he appears in the trailer it looks like he'll probably only have a fairly brief role in this one.
This is a pretty dark scene so it's hard to see what's going on. Something appears to head toward Peter from behind. It looks like it might be the lizard from The Amazing Spider-Man.
The lightning bolt indicates the presence of Electro- we know Jamie Foxx is reprising his role from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in this film. There is some speculation that the dust is actually Sandman but I think it's probably just debris from the electricity strike.
This is clearly one of the Green Goblin's bombs from the original Green Goblin/Norman Osborn in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. We also hear Willem Dafoe's laugh over the soundtrack. Dafoe has been more coy than other actors returning to play villains from previous incarnations of the franchise but this tease confirms his presence in this film.
Alfred Molina reprises his role as Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2. Molina has freely talked about his role in this film so I suspect that's why this trailer felt happy to show him off and just tease the other villains. Molina has spoken about this character appearing in the MCU just before he was about to die in his own universe.
There is a possibility however that some/all of these returning villains are not the same characters we saw in their previous incarnations but variants from different universes. Jamie Foxx has suggested that Electro is going to have a different look in this film which perhaps supports that theory.
Doc Ock says "hello Peter" and the trailer makes it look like he's speaking to Tom Holland's Peter Parker. However, this may be clever editing and he could well be talking to the Peter Parker from his universe, played by Tobey Maguire. It's long been rumoured that Maguire and Andrew Garfield will both return in this film but this trailer does nothing to confirm that. It certainly seems to be possible although I do wonder that if they do appear that it may only be in the climax of the film. I think the focus will still very much be on Tom Holland's Peter Parker, as it should be, but that doesn't mean we won't get to a little action from the previous Spider-Men.
