Disney+ Day 2021 Announcements

The first Disney+ day saw the streaming service announce a whole slew of new content, including plenty of Marvel TV shows.

Before we look ahead at the new announcements, the Disney+ Day Marvel Studios special gave us our first look at some of the previously announced shows. We saw some shots from Moon Knight which seemed to largely consist of Oscar Issac looking quite stressed but there was also a glance at some of the costume.

We also saw a few shots from She-Hulk including a brief moment of Jennifer Walters and Bruce Banner together and some glimpses at the design of the character. Interestingly, the synopsis for the show says  it will "welcome a host of Marvel characters" suggesting that we'll see more than just Banner and Abomination in the show.

We also saw a few shots from Ms. Marvel which don't really give anything away. The show has now been confirmed to stream in "summer 2022" which is earlier than has recently been reported.

Secret Invasion has been given a rather different logo from the first one we saw and is now more skrull-based and we also saw a glimpse of Nick Fury from the show, looking a little older and not sporting his iconic eyepatch.

Two rumoured live-action shows were confirmed. First was Echo, a show which will focus on deaf superhero Maya Lopez played by Alaqua Cox who will debut in the Hawkeye show. Then there's Agatha: House of Harkness which will see Kathryn Hahn reprise her role as Agatha Harkness from WandaVision in her own show. Jac Schaefer who was the head writer and executive producer of WandaVision will perform the same roles on this new show.

It's been reported recently that Marvel Studios are looking to expand their animation output and several new shows were announced. As well as confirmed that there will be a season two of What If?, the studio announced that they are making a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series which will be called X-Men: 97 and presumably will continue the continuity of that show. Also coming is Marvel Zombies which "reimagines the Marvel Universe as a generation of heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie scourge". It's not clear if this show will be set in the same universe as the zombie episode of What If? but it seems to supply it will be it's own universe.

Perhaps most intriguing from the animation side is Spider-Man: Freshman Year. Apparently the series "follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we've ever seen and a style that celebrates the character's early comic book roots". This suggest we're going to see a cool comic book-esque animation style. In terms of plot it's pretty unclear- it sort of suggests this will look at Parker before he becomes Spider-Man and maybe we're going to see the moment he is bitten by the radioactive spider that hasn't yet been shown in the MCU. No voice cast has been announced so it seems likely it's not going to be Tom Holland doing the voice.

It looks like Disney+ is going to be treat us with lots of Marvel content over the coming years with lots of new characters we haven't seen on screen before and the return of some fan favourites. I'm off to listen to Agatha All Along for the millionth time.
