Eternals Trailer Breakdown

The final trailer for Eternals has arrived and gives us our best look at the plot of the film yet. Today I am going to breakdown the trailer and though this isn't meant to be exhaustive it should cover most of the major talking points.

The trailer opens with Ajak (Salma Hayek) giving Ikaris (Richard Madden) a basic summary of the plot. "Five years ago Thanos erased half the population of the universe. The people of this planet brought everyone back with a snap of a finger. The sudden return of the population provided the necessary energy for the emergence to begin". Bascially, Tony Stark's universe saving snap had cosmic consequences that somehow allowed the monstrous Deviants to enter our universe from whereever they had been hanging out. Eternals sees the powerful beings band together to fight the Deviants.

Here's another really cool take on the Marvel Studios logo- phase 4 has been excellent at doing this so far!

A voiceover says that the Eternals came to Earth 7,000 years ago to protect humans from the Deviants. I'm assuming that this shot shows the ship that the Eternals arrived in. One question that comes to my mind is what did the Eternals do to get rid of the Deviants for most of human history?

Our first view of a deviant- they don't look very friendly!

We see Ikaris take on the deviant and get a look at his powers- he can project cosmic energy beams from his eyes. It's very Superman.

Dane Whitman (Kit Harrington) asked Sersi (Gemma Chan) a question we've all been wondering since the first trailer for Eternals was dropped: "why didn't you guys help fight Thanos?". Her reply is "we were instructed not to interfere in any human conflicts unless Deviants were invovled."

This trailer doesn't seem to really touch on the romance subplot of the film. We know that Ikaris and Sersi have had a relationship in the past and the Eternals appear to have since gone their seperate ways- Sersi is now dating normal human Dane. How long Dane remains a 'normal human' is interesting as in the comic books he is the alter-ego of Black Knight. There's a brief, shadowy moment in the trailer of a man riding a horse which is likely to be Black Knight who we are likely to see more of in the MCU.

This appears to be the Celestial Arishem the Judge. In the comic books this guy judged whether the civilisation of a planet should live or die. The trailer implies it was him, perhaps with other Celestials, that instructed the Eternals not to interfere with human history. In the comic books he also culled the deviant race so he may be the reason they haven't been around for so long. My early theory about this film is that the Eternals are going to come into conflict with Arishem/the Celestials. Perhaps he has judged that humanity should die and has unleashed the Deviants to do this job but the Eternals have taken a liking for us and don't agree.

This is simply a cool shot of the Eternals gathered together. Though not discussion points in themselves, the trailer shows many stunning shots which suggest that director Chloe Zhao has more than lived up to the promise she showed in Nomadland. This could well be the MCU's best looking film yet!

Here we see Dane in Camden in London, suggesting his parts of the film will be set there. It's not clear what exactly is happening here but an iconic London bus is thrown by someone. I suspect this is the moment that the other Eternals find Sersi and some threat emerges as they do so.

Here we see Thena (Angelina Jolie) with a creature that says "you can't protect any of them". This appears to be Kro who often takes the role of the leader of the Deviants. You might note that Thena is very close to Kro and in the comic books the pair have a long-standing on/off relationship (and by long-standing I mean 100,000 years). This should add an interesting dynamic between the characters and raises the possibility that Thena might have reason to betray the other Eternals- could we see her in Malficent-mode again?

I thought this was a great trailer and it really got me excited for the film which is due to be released in November!
