Disney have unveiled their latest release schedule and it's full of Marvel movies!
As we already knew, late 2021 will see the release of Eternals on the 5th November and Spider-Man: No Way Home on 17th December. 2022 has four releases: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on 25th March, Thor: Love and Thunder on 6th June, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on 8th July and The Marvels on 11th November. Then there's two more named films coming in 2023: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantomania on 17th February and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on 5th May.
The remaining Marvel films on the schedule are currently simply known as "Untitled Marvel Project". There's a further three films coming in 2023, meaning we'll get five Marvel films in one year, and another four in 2024. That means there's seven Marvel films with release dates that and no clue of what they will be. So let's speculate!
To start with, there are two announced Marvel films that don't currently have release dates and they are Fantastic 4 directed by Jon Watts and the Mahershala Ali starring Blade so we can assume these are two of those slots. Then there's the films that we know are happening but Marvel haven't officially announced yet. One of these is Captain America 4 starring Anthony Mackie as new Cap Sam Wilson which has been widely reported as in production. We also have the prospect of Deadpool 3 with the character moving over to the MCU- Ryan Reynolds has suggested strongly that this is happening and I wonder if this potentially R-rated film is the reason for a fifth release in 2023.
That leaves us with three more slots that are more mysterious. One obvious area of possibility is X-Men. We know Marvel are working on bringing mutants to the MCU (and they've suggested they will be calling them mutants rather than X-Men) but it's unclear how soon that will happen. Given that there are so many X-Men it's possible that as well as an ensemble movie we could get a solo movie. A new Wolverine perhaps?
Then there's the stuff that Marvel seem to be setting up. With Kang being introduced in Loki it seems likely that an Avengers: Secret Wars movie is somewhere on the horizon but with the need to bring together so many stars it's possible that this won't come about until after 2024. Marvel have recently been introducing lots of younger heroes so it seems pretty likely that one of these titles could be Young Avengers with the likes of Ms. Marvel, Kate Bishop, Ironheart and potentially Spider-Man being on the roster. Then we also have the gradual formation of some sort of less moral team, probably the Thunderbolts, and we've yet to see where that storyline is heading- a Thunderbolts movie is certainly a possibility and it would be different from any Marvel has made so far.
There are other films that we can't entirely rule out. It would be awesome to see Mark Ruffalo finally take centre stage in a Hulk solo film (with a possible guest appearance from She-Hulk). We could potentially also see a sequel to one of the earlier phase 4 films like Eternals or Shang-Chi, the latter of which very much set up future storylines. Or maybe we might get an entirely new property- Silver Surfer is one I personally would love to see.
